Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala took center stage on the eve of the WTA 125 Championships, posing with his father Mike Eala, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio, and Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) secretary-general and Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco during a walk-through of the newly refurbished Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.
The international tournament fires off Monday (Jan. 26), with Eala expected to draw massive local interest as he faces some of the world’s top-ranked players. Anticipating a surge of spectators, the PSC announced plans to install a giant LED screen outside the venue to accommodate fans unable to secure tickets and allow more Filipinos to witness a historic moment for Philippine tennis.
Local organizers said tickets for the semifinal and final rounds have already been sold out, underscoring the growing popularity of the sport and the excitement surrounding Eala’s participation.
The WTA 125 event marks another milestone for the revitalized Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, reinforcing Manila’s return as a key host of world-class sporting events.
